MVLA Monsoon Blue, a top team in northern California, is gearing up to play at the highest level in the country and is looking to add talented players to the roster (including a goalkeeper). Locations for Regional Development Schools will include: Central Valley, East Bay, Marin, Mountain View, Sacramento, San Jose and Tracy. Each training center will be operated by the Earthquakes and will compete in an Earthquakes Pre-Academy League against affiliated programs.
 
"Our goal in establishing Regional Development Schools is to provide a professional environment for the best players around Northern California to learn and practice together," said Earthquakes Academy Director Fred Wilson. "This network of training centers will focus on the implementation of a curriculum that is conducive to youth development while also providing local technical directors an additional resource for coaching education."
 
The Development Schools coaching staff will include current Earthquakes assistant coach Ian Russell (San Jose) and former Earthquakes players Troy Dayak (Tracy) and Albertin Montoya (Mountain View). The other regions will be run by former MLS player Guillermo Jara (East Bay), Cody Worden (Marin), Gregg Thompson (Sacramento) and Dana Taylor (Central Valley).

Each Regional Development School will act as a supplemental program to Northern California players in the U-14 age group. Those selected are not required to leave their current youth club of registration for participation in the Earthquakes Pre-Academy.

To determine player pools, each training center will host tryouts to consider the best 1997, 1998 and 1999 players in Northern California. The price of the program is $275 per player to cover costs for training gear and fees, participation in games and, for those selected, in the San Jose Pre-Academy Showcase. Those in an Earthquakes Regional Development School will also have the opportunity to play in four additional Pre-Academy Showcase events: Generation adidas Cup in Kansas City and tournaments in Vancouver (Can.), Portland, and Seattle.

The players selected from the training pools will also be eligible to play in the Quakes’ Pre-Academy League from Jan. 2012 through June 2012. The league will be comprised of teams from each Earthquakes Regional Development School.

Salvador is a soccer legend in El Salvador. At the age of 26, he represented his country at the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico where they played Mexico, the Soviet Union and Belgium in Group 1.Salvador Mariona played for great clubs including Atlante, Alianza F.C. and Platense Zacatecoluca retiring in 1977 to become a coach. He took over as Chief Executive of Alianza in 2005. Alianza is one of the most popular and successful clubs in El Salvador. It plays in the Primera Division, the highest tier league in the country. It is the first Central American and Salvadoran club to win the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, one of only three Salvadoran teams to have done so to date. He’s currently the President of the Players Soccer Association in El Salvador. He’s one of the only 2 players who went to the World Cup twice. As a captain and coach. During his Career he has played and won against Pele and Vava at Futbol Club America, Mexico. 
 
 
His main goal is to give school kids and especially street kids chance to be able to play the beautiful game of soccer and to keep them off the streets or bad influence/habits. This is something simple for the kids to create and be a part of. He’s very active in the soccer association in his country, always thriving to make a difference by simply helping develop the grassroots level. This help is very close to his heart, as he also came from nothing and started playing soccer barefoot in a small town of Santa Tecla.

Teresa Noyola, from MVLA Mercury 90’ and former Gatorade Player of the year, led Stanford to their first NCAA Championship on December 4, 2011. Teresa shared the field this past weekend with Stanford teammate and former MVLA Teammate, Lindsay Taylor . Both Teresa and Lindsay have been named to the NCAA All-America first team and Abigail Dahlkemper(92’ Avalanche) made NCAA All-American third team. Teresa also won the Honda Player of the year award.   Two more MVLA alumni were part of the NCAA Championship. MVLA Avalanche recent graduates and freshman this year Lauren Schmidt (Stanford) and Audrey Gibson (Duke) found themselves sitting on opposite sides for their college teams.

U.S. Soccer announced the new head coaches for the nation’s Under-17 and U-20 women’s national teams on Monday, and while many area soccer fans are already familiar with U-20s boss Steve Swanson thanks to his impressive work with the University of Virginia women’s program over the past decade, U-17s coach Albertin Montoya is a younger, less-prominent figure who has spent most of his career on the West Coast.
Given how crucial the middle teenage years can be in terms of player development, Montoya’s efforts may prove to be particularly influential on the future of the senior national team. This week he was the subject of two in-depth Q&A sessions, one for U.S. Soccer’s official website and the other by Jeff Kassouf, editor of leading women’s soccer blog The Equalizer.
 
Both make for fascinating reading for aspiring young players, their parents or anyone else interested in the way forward for a U.S. women’s program which finds itself at something of a crossroads in the wake of the senior squad’s valiant, but imperfect, performance in the 2011 Women’s World Cup.
“It’s not good enough now to just rely on our athleticism that we’ve always had,” Montoya told ussoccer.com. “We have to take a step back and make sure we spend more time on the technical part of the game.  Every training session with our U-17s we’ll spend at least 30-45 minutes on cleaning up their game technically. Our passing needs to be better, the pace of the pass, right foot, left foot, the way they receive the ball, the way they take the touch away from pressure, and we can’t just count on a bad touch and then use our speed to get to it.”
 
Montoya also alludes to the importance of finding effective ways to prioritize the formation of well-rounded, technically proficient players rather than successful teams at the youth level, drawing comparisons with the renowned academy system at European club powerhouse FC Barcelona.
“We are starting to reward clubs that are developing players and not just winning teams,” Montoya explained to Kassouf. “What happens in the club world right now; there is so much emphasis on winning. There is a lot of pressure on these club coaches and coaching directors, too, to produce winning teams and development has really taken a back seat. That’s unfortunate.
 
"But there are club teams that are producing some special players and if we can get the message out that ‘hey, that’s what we are looking for now,’ then the Xavis of the world and the [Lionel] Messis, those are the type of players that can play.”

Led by Montoya Soccer Academy coach Seth Alberico, the team’s objectives are to (i) provide the highest level of training that focuses on technical and tactical techniques along with composure and confidence with the ball, (ii) provide a development environment that is competitive and positive, and (iii) compose a team that can compete at the highest level of competition. Mercury Black is fulfilling these goals and, in less than two years, recently won the 2011 CYSA Cal North State Championship at age U14 and made their first appearance at the USYS Far West Regional tournament in Boise, ID. “Although we didn’t do as well as we hoped, it was a great bonding experience for our team. We emerged stronger after playing high quality competition from other states,” said Sara Lipscomb #4. 

The team’s success comes not only from the focus on technical skills and understanding of the game, but also from the camaraderie and chemistry of the players and parents. Comprised of players with diverse backgrounds from Redwood City to Gilroy, they come together with a single goal of playing excellent soccer. This single goal is clear from Tegan McGrady’s take-away on FWRL play, “we now know what we need to do to improve as a team to compete at a higher level of play.”

In the coming months and years, Mercury Black plans to play in nationally-recognized college showcases, providing each player the opportunity to play beyond youth soccer and at the college level.
